What are the main differences between the free version of Jira and the paid version?

I'm assessing the different versions to see if our management consulting company (of ~70 people) should get it for a few people to add it to their skillset. Is the free version sufficient? What are the limitations?

You don't say what 'few' means. For $10 you can get the server version for up to 10 users. The free version in the cloud has some limitations.  You can run the $10 version on a workstation or laptop.
