What EXCEL versions are supported by JIRA 6.4 export?

I am running JIRA 6.4 with the Zephyr 2.6 plugin and EXCEL 2016.

The export creates an XLS file but I cannot open it using my EXCEL 2016.

Looking at it with a text editor it looks fine, but this does not help me.

Is the reasonfor this behavior that I am using Excel 2016 which might not be supported?
