We cannot mention users with the (@username) function when they don't have an active Jira session

Loyd Jones September 25, 2019

We cannot tag users when they don't have an active Jira session, when the user is not actively logged in, the user shows inactive when we try to tag them. However, once the user logs into Jira and has an active session, we are then able to tag them.

Previously, we could tag a user regardless of them being logged into Jira or not.

This is not how Jira works.  It has a list of valid users, and does not care whether they are logged in or not - if someone has an account, they can be "@ mentioned"

This suggests you have some customisation that is looking at logins and blocking the mentions.  Could you have a look at

  • Admin -> system info -> modified files
  • Admin -> manage apps

Hi Nic,

I agree, as a long time Jira user I know this is abnormal. It just started happening about 2 to 3 weeks ago. I was hoping someone else had the same problem, and thus already has a solution. Will look into what you suggested.

I'm sorry, but "tag" is a bit unclear.  Do you mean you have a field with a list of people, or are you using the "mention" function (@username) in a text field, or something else?

Loyd Jones September 25, 2019

Yes, the mention function (@UserName).

Thank you for the clarification, it's very much appreciated - as a long-term Jira admin, I needed to ask, because it could have meant several things in "jira speak", and you don't need or want essays on the ones it is not!
