We just went through this with our environment. Its fairly straight forward but I would suggest making sure your DB if it needs to be upgraded is done first. High level instructions we followed are below assuming you are running on a Linux based VM.

1.stop Jira

2. backup jira home and install directories

3. backup DB

4. copy new install files to your Atlassian directory

5. unzip new JIRA software package into installation directory

6. set JIRA home directory to existing home directory for new install

7. update ojdbc/jdbc drivers if needed

8.  copy your previous jre directory into new directory

9. apply any special config changes needed for new version to files like server.xml, web.xml setenv.sh.

10 . update your bash_profile with new path and jira home directories if installing on a linux server.

11. copy new jar plugins to new version home directory

12. run a which jira to make sure all paths were updated and that your start command is running correct start-jira version

13. start Jira

14. navigate to manage apps and update any OBR plugins

15. perform full re-index

There is no better way than following Atlassian Documentation

If you have any other questions, please don';t hesitate to ask
