I am trying to determine the best way through updating my company's Jira system. When it comes to the updates themselves, which should I update: Software or Core? We don't have a license for Core, but is it necessary to update it along with Software? Can I just update Software and ignore the update message for Core? Do I need both? If yes, which one first?
I get the differences between the two and that Core is the underlying base upon which applications are run. I understand that this means it is likely that the Core should be updated prior to updating Software, but I am unable to find where this is explicitly stated.
As our small team utilizes Software extensively, I cannot take the risk of a prolonged downtime due to fixing install errors or other install/update -time anomalies. Can you help?
Thanks.
Since you are not currently licensing Jira Core, you don't need to use the Jira Core installation package. But instead you should use one of the Jira Software install packages found on this page https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/download
When you use this install package, it will automatically update the Core system for you, and it also updates Jira Software at the same time.
Personally I would recommend the Upgrading Jira with a fallback method for any production upgrade. It will take longer to do than a rapid upgrade, but it is far safer for your data. You can see the different ways to upgrade explained further in Upgrading Jira.
In the vast majority of cases, you can't just upgrade Software without upgrading Jira Core as well. There are some minor version changes where you can do this, say Jira 7.0.0 to 7.0.2 for example. But this kind of incremental, in-application updating has largely been phased out of Jira due to complications.
What version are you using now? And what version are you upgrading to?
I am only trying to update Jira Software from 7.3.4 to 7.11.1...I was lazy and got a bit behind on checking for software updates. This seems to answer my question, however. I was simply not able to find the info stating that updating Software would auto-update the core, and was unsure how to proceed.
Have to check in to that fallback method...(not exactly in control of resources and all - just the "fix it" guy)
Thanks a bunch!
