Understanding User Filtering and User Groups in Jira Cloud: Need Help Resolving Issue

LaTonya A_ Pearson November 1, 2023

Hello everyone,

I recently inherited administrative duties for Jira Cloud and have encountered an issue with user filtering. One of our users is unable to see user names when filtering tickets by user name. However, when I added him to another user group, he was able to see the user names.

From my understanding, user groups are primarily used for license management and shouldn't affect filtering or project-level permissions. I'm puzzled as to why adding the user to a different group resolved the issue.

I would greatly appreciate any insights or explanations regarding this matter. Additionally, I'm considering consolidating these user groups, but I'm concerned that it might cause problems with users being able to see user's names when filtering issues.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

@LaTonya A_ Pearson you're absolutely right that User Groups are used for license management. However, groups can (and often are) used for permissions. To see the specifics, you'll likely need to go into the specific project and review the project permissions.

As a general example, my instance has a user group 'jira-administrators'. This group has *system* admin access and is added to every project with the Administrator role.

I would recommend caution when consolidating user groups as it can be difficult to determine where exactly they are being used.
