Unable to transition issues with subtasks in the Kanban backlog

Deleted user

Hi all,

I have a built a workflow with transitions and mapped statuses from the workflow to the Kanban board, but I am not able to transition an issue with a sub-task from 'Backlog' to 'To Do'. However, I am able to transition them individually.

I believe I should be able to do so as described here unless I did something wrong in the workflow/transitions setup? Or it is only available for the premium plan?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Here are screenshots of the setup

Hi Michael - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Not sure if I am following the question, however, I suspect Jack is one the right path (he usually is :-)

Are you wanting to pull an issue from Backlog to To Do and all of the sub-tasks get pulled automatically? Or are you trying to do something else?

Hi John,

Yes, I'd like the sub-tasks to be pulled automatically with the parent task and I thought it would be the case as described in the last paragraph here:

The first bullet point doesn't work but the second one does.

Do you have a transition screen on the transition from Backlog to To Do in your workflow?

I do have the default Kanban issue screen selected for all transitions including from Backlog to To Do.

That's the problem, I think. The multiple issues will not transition when there is a transition screen attached. If you removed the transition screen as a test, it would probably work to just move the collapsed parent issue.

John,

Yes, it works without the transition screen but then you kind of make the workflow irrelevant if 'All' can transition to 'To do' and/or 'Backlog', right?

Anyways. thanks for the help.

Depends on what your transition screen is doing and why you have to have it.

Sub-tasks will not, by default, transition/follow the transition of parent. You can use Automation to make this happen if desired. I should clarify that once on the Kanban board you can move parent and have subtasks move if you collapse the parent, hiding sub-tasks.

I will have to do some testing but I’m pretty sure the first bullet only applies if you’re on the kanban board not in the backlog. However, as things change quickly and cloud I need to retest to verify this.

Cheers Jack. Automation works but I have to refresh the screen to see the sub-task transitioned to the status where the parent task is. Otherwise it stays in the backlog

So, I thought the functionality described in the article would be a better/slicker option.

Indeed. The documentation does seem to Imply that it should work. However, I just don’t recall that being my experience. again things change quickly and cloud. When you move the task in the backlog is it in a collapsed view? When I get a few minutes I’ll retest it if this question is still open at that time.

Yes, when I move the task from 'Backlog' to 'To Do' it is in a collapsed view (see below). When I expand the task I can move the task and sub-task individually from 'Backlog' to 'To do'. I just realise I didn't attach the error I get. Here it is:

What about once a task is on the kanban board? If you have a task with subtasks on the kanban board and you collapse the task and move it do the subtasks also move?

finally do the subtasks share of the same workflow as the task?

I am not sure how one can collapse the task on the kanban board? I see this:

All my issues (epic, story, task and sub-task) share the same workflow
