Trying to delete tasks/stories/subtasks. Getting Error.

Jessica Chase July 8, 2019

Hi all,

I am trying to delete tasks from the backlog and am getting this error. Any idea what I need to do to be able to delete tasks, stories or subtasks?

"Error

It seems that you have tried to perform an operation which you are not permitted to perform.

If you think this message is wrong, please contact your Jira administrators."

Thanks,

Jessica

Hi @Jessica Chase ,

you need to have the permission to delete issues. This is a project permission. As the error message says, ask your administrator.

As an administrator, check the permission schemes of your projects.

and be careful about deleting issues vs. just closing. once they are gone they can't be recovered unless you have a backup and end up doing a full restore.

Hi @Thomas Schlegel  - how do I do this? "As an administrator, check the permission schemes of your projects."

Hi @Jessica Chase ,

Your Project Admin can check the permission this way:

  • Click the Administration button on the navigation bar (top-right, it's a cog)
  • Select Projects
  • Select your Project
  • On the left-hand menu, scroll-down and select Permissions
  • Locate the permission 'Delete Issues'

You need to be a part of the project role / group that has access to Delete Issues (if there is one).

If one of your project roles has access - your Project Admin can add you to it via the 'Users and roles' section (one above Permissions). The add users hyperlink is in the top-right.

If your permission scheme needs to be edited instead to allow a role or group delete access, you'll need to contact a System Admin for your Jira instance to action this for you.

Thanks @Stephen Wright  I am the Project Admin. I followed these steps and I still can't delete any tasks so I just closed the tasks.

There's no Delete option in the More menu @Jessica Chase ?

Hard to comment without knowing the full extent of the issue - if there's anything else you can tell us or show us, maybe we might be able to find a solution :). But if Close works for you also awesome!
