The value "username" is invalid when adding a user in project

Hello,
Need help regarding a user I'm trying to add to a role in a project. When adding the username, I get username does not exists then a message appears "The value <username> is invalid".
Checking under Administration > Users. The user is duplicate but the other one is already inactive:
I've already renamed the Username and Email address of the inactive one but still when I add the user to a role in a project I still get the same error above.
Your help and/or suggestions is highly appreciated.
