Hello @Mike Taylor

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

It is possible that the course material you are following is not up to date. The product is evolving constantly.

Without being able to view that course material I can't provide any more insight than that. Can you provide a link to the course material you are referencing?

Indeed those materials are outdated. The "Roadmap" terminology was replaced with "Timeline" many months ago. I don't see any information readily available that indicates when the material is last updated.

You may want to visit the free on-demand learning available directly from Atlassian by clicking on the Learning link at the top of the Community pages.

Hello @Mike Taylor  ,

Welcome to the Atlassian community!

🤔 Why You're Seeing “Timeline” Instead of “Roadmap” in Jira Cloud

In the latest Jira Cloud experience (2025), Atlassian has renamed the “Roadmap” feature to “Timeline” — and this applies to both:

  • Team-managed projects

  • Company-managed projects

So whether you're in a team-managed or company-managed project, you'll now see “Timeline” instead of “Roadmap” — this is expected and not a bug.

🔍 Feature Comparison

Project Type Timeline Feature Notes
Team-managed ✅ Basic timeline Simplified, ideal for small, independent teams
Company-managed ✅ More structured timeline Includes more robust planning (e.g., advanced hierarchy if using Premium)

What You Can Do

1. If you're following Coursera or other tutorials:

Older tutorials may still refer to this feature as “Roadmap”, but in the new Jira Cloud UI, it is now called “Timeline”.

2. To enable it:

  • Go to your project

  • Click Project settings → Features

  • Turn on the Timeline feature (not “Roadmap” anymore)

You’ll then see the Timeline tab in the left-hand menu for planning epics and scheduling.

Pro Tip:

  • Use Company-managed projects if you're working with larger teams and need detailed planning, workflows, or integrations.

  • Use Team-managed projects for more autonomy and ease of use.

  • Both support Timelines, but the Company-managed setup provides more customization options and better cross-team coordination (especially with Jira Premium/Advanced Roadmaps).

@pawarsachin84

Your answer is incorrect.

In the new navigation if you are in a Company Managed project and navigate to Project Settings > Features, there is no "Enable Roadmap" option. The option is named Timeline.

The term "Timeline" has replaced "Roadmap" in both Team Managed and Company Managed projects in Jira Cloud.

@Trudy Claspill

Thank you — you're absolutely right.
The Jira Cloud UI now uses “Timeline” instead of “Roadmap” across both Team-managed and Company-managed projects. We’ve corrected our response accordingly. Appreciate the clarification and updated insight!
