For user stories I have added story points which I can see in the backlog view in a column on the RHS. These values are formatted in american style, using comma to separate thousands and dots for decimals. How can I change this into european style?
Next to that, I would like to add another field, similar to story points, to this view. How can I achieve that?
The number formatting in this case is actually being determine by the user profile. Hence each user could have a different profile preference and in turn each user might have a different separator for the same value. Managing your user profile explains this in more detail. Specifically, the language preference you select will determine whether number fields appear with a , or a . for separating thousands. I tested this against my own profile, where my English_US shows a comma, but switching to Deutsch (German), and then refreshing that same page shows the same value but with a period . for the thousands separator.
As for adding other fields to cards, there are instructions on how to do this in Customizing cards: Adding fields to cards. This has to be done in the board configuration. You can add other custom fields to a board this way.
Thanks Andrew, but actually this is not exactly what I try to achieve. I still would like to keep the language set to English (US or UK), but only have different formatting of numbers. That is not possible?
Adding a custom field results in a text in the backlog below the issue title. I would like to have a similar field as story points, shown in the same way (separate column and an elliptical shaped background).

There is not a system setting you can change in Jira to affect this change site wide. It's set to the user profile preferences. That said, there is a KB on how you can edit the velocity templates to remove the comma from the display entirely. Remove Commas for Values held in Number Field Custom Field Type
I realize this might not be exactly what you are looking for, but it might help to understand some other ways to customize the way this data is displayed on the page.
