Stories created under an Epic. These stories moved to a different project. How to close the Epic now

Magesh.Shanmugam July 7, 2020

We have created 6 stories under an epic in project A. Three stories are completed and closed in Project A. Other three stories are moved to project B, as this will be done by a different team. Currently these stories are in Backlog in Project B.

Now our PO, wants to close the Epic in project A. How do I close this Epic when 3 linked stories are still open in project B. How do I break this link for closing the Epic, do I need to create new stories and close the old (linked) stories. Please advice.

Hello @Magesh.Shanmugam

Thank you for reaching out.

By default, you can resolve an Epic even if there are any open child issues linked to them unless you are using some third-party app that provides this kind of restriction.

If that's the case, you can remove the Epic link following the steps below:

In Classic projects: Navigate to the Issues linked to the Epic > Click to Edit the Epic Link field > Click on the backspace key to erase it:

In Next-gen Projects:

  1. Navigate to your board or backlog, or open an issue.

  2. Hover over the issue and select more (•••).

  3. Select Change parent

  4. In the dropdown menu, select Remove.
