I have downloaded and installed Jira Software but I only see that I'm installing and configuring Jira Core. This is for the server version, not cloud. Do I need to set permissions to see the correct software? What am I not doing correctly? Thanks in advanced.
Software runs on top of Core, and the installer is a bundle - most of its work is installing core, then it goes though much the same as a human clicking on "install Jira Software" would do, although working with the version that it has inside the installer package, rather than downloading it again.
What do you see under "manage applications"?
Bear with me, I'm still very new to this if my questions seem naive. Under Jira Administration > Applications I only see Jira Core 8.5.6 listed. I do see on the right column a link for JIRA Software. However, after I clicked and accepted the agreement, the installer status progresses until it crashes near 100% and a notification tells me, "An unexpected error occurred. Refer to logs for more information."
So I don't know if this is the place to help me debug my install but it seems apparent now that I have to install Jira Software subsequent to installing Jira Core?

It certainly implies that the installation of Jira Software has not been done by the installer.
The attempt to install Software by this single click is always the first thing to try.
Next thing to do is read the logs to find out why the install is failing. (Should be in <Jira home>/log/atlassian-jira.log
