We are looking to have our project keys auto generated in a sequenced order, i.e PRJ0000001, PRJ0000002, PRJ0000003, PRJ0000004, PRJ0000005, etc. We have many projects on the go at any one time (hundreds) and continually get new ones, so manually entering a project key or letting the system enter it we will be bound to get duplicates really quickly. We would like a system so we just get a key generated like this for us to the next available number. So far we haven't seen anything that can do this. Does anyone else have this need or has anyone found a solution to a similar need?
The system won't suggest duplicates. But there's no automation or rules you can set, it just guesses from the project name.
I've not seen anyone ask for this before - people seem to mostly want informative project keys, ones they at least stand some chance of working out or relating back to a project name.
I don't think there's much of a solution that doesn't involve hacking the core code in Jira
Thanks Nic. It seems that if I have hundreds of projects every year, It will be hard to have keys that are "related" to the project. We discussed this and it seems that if we can search on labels in the project and the project name itself, the key is basically irrelevant.

Just of note,, I also just tried putting in 2 similarly named projects - and JIRA automatically put in the project key on the 2nd one as a duplicate and then said I couldn't use it.
