SITE ADMIN VS JIRA ADMIN

I logged into Jira with a new email - expecting that it will create a new jira instance with that email as the site admin, jira admin etc.

However, it made me a jira admin of that instance but made my previous account the site admin.

Why did this happen?

Hello @Chike Okafor

When you create a new organisation, you are automatically a org admin and jira admin.

Here are some differences:

  • Org admin - highest admin priveleges: has control over multiple sites where multiple sites are one ogranisation; can manage users and billing and everything else under the admin.atlassian.com
  • Jira admin - user that has the Administer Jira global permission; they take care of the workflows, schemes, creating company-managed projects and everything else
  • Site admin - They can do everything like org admins, except org admins manage all of the sites, while the site admin manages only one site - unless they are part of more than one site-admin default Jira group

Hey @Nikola Perisic , that trips me a bit.

Can you elaborate, what tangible UI does the site admin has access to that anyone else does not?

Hello

Site admin can invite the users to their site where they are the site admins. One organization can have multiple sites. For example, organization A, has sites like B and C. Site admin for site B, is able to invite users to site B only.

  • Site admins can create groups.
  • Site admins cannot install apps.
  • Site admins cannot access audit logs.
  • Site admins cannot another site admin a site admin.
  • Site admins cannot access billing

Okay, thank you @Nikola Perisic , but I am still confused what a site is, would e.g. Nikola.atlassian.net constitute a site? I know already svetlin.atlassian.net would be an instance, but svetlin-sbx.atlassian.net, being a separate one, can it belong to the same site as svetlin.atlassian.net?

Can a site bear the same name as an instance?

Is that thing that I covered in orange the site in my case, I see it is called the same as my instance?
