Restricting Edits to Specific Fields?

I am looking to find out if it is possible to restrict which users are able to edit some fields in a story while leaving others editable to them. For example, in my example story, would it be possible to allow a certain user to edit the start dates for each project stage on the right (RPN, scope, etc.), but not the due dates? If that isn't possible, would I be able to restrict permission to edit all dates, but retain permission to comment?

Jira doesn't directly support that. You might be able to do it with scripting. The alternative is to put those fields on transitions only allow people in certain roles to execute. It could get messy if you need many of them. The transition would open a window with the field and return to the same status. You would then put the fields on just the view screen and create if the reporter needs to set the field initially.
