Restoring older version of a backup. 6.2 -> 7.2

Dan Randall August 7, 2017

Hi. I'd like to install JIRA 7.2 on my new server.

The XML backup i have is from Jira 6.2.

Can I just go ahead and install 7.2, and restore the 6.2 backup on it? Or what's the best-practice for this?

- Same linux OS.

- I'm not allowed to upgrade the existing version of 6.2.

Thanks in advance..

You'l need to create a temporary 6.2 server, import the data, then upgrade it to 7.2.

Data imports from different versions can work as an upgrade, but I wouldn't try 6.2 to 7.anything.  Crossing the major release version usually fails spectacularly.  (In your case, I'd test importing a 6.2 into a 6.4 install)
