Replicate jira server to test update

Hi,
I would like to update my jira server from version 7.8.0 to version 8.5.X.
I read here that the first thing I need to do is to create a replica of my Jira instance in a testing environment. I followed this link but I am still a bit lost.
I have already a test server running. Does the dev license allow to run several test instances?
Or should I apply the described steps on my already running instance?
Furthermore, I am not sure the steps I found also apply to jira 7.8.0 (they are from 8.5.X documentation).
