Repeat notification of same task

Why do I get multiple notifications on a task, without pinpointing the actual notification?

If I get assigned a task (1st notification) and I get mentioned (2nd notification), why am I seeing 7? 

Is  there a subsequent update if a date is changed or another dropdown element is updated that triggers a notification?

Welcome to the Community! The amount of notifications you receive is managed by settings in your Jira instance, You can manage the notifications from your 'personal settings' in Jira to group updates and to select for which updates you'd like to receive them. This article has some details:
