Referencing issue key in comment is saved with null

If I reference an issue in a comment, Jira replaces the issue key with something strange when saving:

example issueKey: OVERHEAD-29485

saved text: OVERHEADOVERHEADnull-29485

Why is Jira adding 'OVERHEADnull'?
