Recover the Jira key number after deleting it

Mira September 27, 2023

Hi,

Recently I deleted a bunch of Jira tickets including Epic, Story, and Task.

After deleting unwanted tickets, the number of recently created tickets doesn't follow the right number as I expected.

For instance, I deleted the tickets ABC-4 and ABC-5 and when creating a new ticket the number is ABC-6.

Is there any way I can reuse the numbers ABC-4 and ABC-5 as new numbers for my tickets?

Hello @Mira

I would strongly advise against trying to reuse issue keys.

Jira keeps track of the last sequential number used in an issue key for a project (or the next one that can be used, I'm not sure which). There are some unsupported methods to force the number that will be used next. But, again, I would advise against actually doing that to reuse numbers that were already used, even if those issues were deleted.

Why is it a problem to allow the numbering to continue as is, with some numbers skipped?

Thanks Trudy

Actually, there is no problem at all.

It seems like I shouldn't reuse the deleted number as you explained.

Thank you so much!
