Real-world use cases for Atlassian Backup and Restore

Michele Ghirxi
July 1, 2026

I am currently researching practical applications of Atlassian's native Backup and Restore functionality. While the documentation covers how to use it, I am looking for insights into when and why teams have actually used it in production sites.

If your organization has utilized Atlassian’s Backup and Restore tools, could you share your use case? Specifically, I'm interested in:

  1. The Scenario: What specific problem or event required you to perform a restore?
  2. Lessons Learned: What is one thing you wish you knew before you started the restore process?

Looking forward to reading your responses!

Hi @Michele Ghirxi

Some customer scope: A German manufacturing company classified as an "Important Entity' under German NIS2 laws must follow Article 21 of the NIS2 Directive. This requires proving that critical systems like Jira and Confluence can be fully restored after a cyber incident or data loss.

Atlassian guarantees infrastructure resilience and platform availability, but the customer is strictly responsible for data integrity, logical data corruption, and accidental or malicious deletions.

At the moment, some customers rely on manual export for small instances and store, for example, a Confluence Cloud backup .zip file downloaded locally from the Backup Manager.

Now we are evaluating Atlassian's new "Backup and restore" feature to automate daily backups , monitor backup health, and enable automated restores.
