Problem with editing an issue

Hi,
We have a problem when editing an issue.
For example if we add someone to "responsible" field during editing and then pressing update, loading takes ages and changes aren't saved. It usually happens when trying to edit different roles.
What could be the cause and how could we solve it?

Is it a standard JIRA field or something custom developed?

Seems that all the problematical fields so far are custom fields.
