Parent or Parent Links not availabl

David Terrano October 20, 2023

Hi I'm using Jira Software (cloud) Premium.  I've setup a Team Managed Software Development Project.  I've added a new Issue Type called Feature.  I've then created Features and Epics on my Scrum Board.  I'd like to link the Epics to the Features using the Parent or Parent Link.  However, I'm not seeing that as an option in my Epic.  I'd like to understand how to make the Parent or Parent Link available within my Epics.  Any help would be appreciated?  Thanks in advance!!!

Hello @David Terrano

Are you trying to make the Epics children of the Features?

According to this documentation, while Advanced Roadmaps can now include Team Managed projects, it does not appear that Team Managed projects can make use of extending the issue hierarchy above the Epic level.

Issues from team-managed projects can only be rolled-up to the Epic level

The default parent issue type in Jira Software is Epic, which is what we use in this documentation. However, this is a dynamic value based on how your administrator configures the parent issue type. For example, if your project uses feature as the parent issue type, you’ll see Create Feature.

Across all of Jira, issues from team-managed projects can only:

  • be parented by the project in which they were created

  • contain issues at or below the Epic hierarchy level

These two facts mean that issues from team-managed projects can’t be rolled-up to a higher hierarchy level in Advanced Roadmaps. Learn more about roll ups.

To link Epics to Features in Jira Software (Cloud) Premium:

Configure Issue Links:

In Jira Settings, go to Issues.
Under Issue Features, click "Issue Linking."
Enable "Epic-Feature Link."
Link Epics to Features:

Open an Epic.
Click "More" (three dots) > "Link."
Choose "is parent of" or "is child of."
Search for and select the Feature to link.
If you can't see these options, ask your Jira admin to enable the Epic-Feature link in the settings. This helps manage project hierarchy effectively.

To be clear that method uses the generic issue linking functionality. That method does not correspond to the built in recognition of parent/child relationships in Jira. Linking issues in that manner will not show them related as parent and children in the Advanced Roadmap Plans functionality available in the Premium subscription plan.
