Watchers are not getting notifications when an Epic is created or when comments are added. How can we fix this?

Hey @Alissa and welcome to Atlassian Community!

Here's a few things to check:

Go to "Project Settings" and under "Notifications" settings make sure "All Watchers" is added to both Issue Created and Issue Commented On.

For issue creation notifications you need to make sure you add the watchers during the creation of the issue in order for the notification flow for 'Issue created" to include them.

Obviously you need to make sure notifications aren't being blocked due to people's personal notification settings too.

Hope one of the above fixes this for you, if not let me know and lets see if we can figure it out. Best!

Mike

Hi @Alissa ,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

To analyse the cause of issue where watchers are not getting notifications when an Epic/workitem is created or when comments are added, follow these steps:

1. Check the Notification Scheme

  • Ensure that the Notification Scheme for your project includes "All Watchers" for the relevant events:

    • Issue Created (for Epic creation)

    • Issue Commented or Issue Updated (for comments)

  • Go to Project Settings > Notifications and verify these settings. If "All Watchers" is not listed for these events, add it.

2. Confirm Watcher Permissions

  • Make sure users have the Browse Projects permission; otherwise, they won't receive notifications even if they're watchers.

3. Verify User Email and Notification Preferences

  • Users should check their personal notification settings to ensure they haven't disabled email notifications for issue activity.

  • Users will not receive notifications for their own actions (e.g., if they create the Epic themselves)

4. Use the Notification Helper and Permission Helper in Jira to diagnose if necessary permission or access is granted.

I hope the above will help you find the cause of the issue and fix the problem. Have a good day!
