Dear community,

I was not able to sort epics in a roadmap, Jira has been throwing an error "Ranking is disabled, as the Filter Query for this board is not ordered by ascending Rank.".

The community suggests to configure the board, however there's no such option for Jira next-gen project. Also, there's no option to create classic project, not sure if this is our corporate thing.

Today it just worked, however nothing was changed in settings.

I want to understand why it was happening? Was it a bug? What needs to be done if this happens again?

Thanks,
Hayk

Hello @Haik

Welcome to the Atlassian Community.

There are a couple of old behaviors that would cause the error you are facing with the reordering of Epics in a Next-gen roadmap, however, they were all improved a couple of months ago and the sort of Epics should properly work in the roadmap view now:

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-18529

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWCLOUD-18895

In fact, the Epics listed in the roadmap view of Next-gen projects are automatically sorted based on the Rank field, and this behavior can not be changed.

That being said, I believe the root cause of the error can be one of the two below:

  1. It might be caused by an integrity error in the lexoRank field added to one of your roadmap Epics, fixed after rendering the page again:
Error when ranking issues due to lexorank data integrity problem
  2. Your browser cache may have addressed information from a previous Classic project after you switched to Next-gen

As the error is not happening anymore, we recommend the following actions:

  1. Clear your browser cache to ensure it is not affecting your site
  2. If the error happens again, please provide us with a screenshot of the error message together with any errors returned in the development tools of your browser, so we can properly diagnose the issue.
  3. Also, confirm if the error happens to any Epics in your roadmap or only to a specific one
  4. About the ability to create classic projects, you must have the Global administrator permission to do it. If you need this ability, please contact your site-admin and ask him to set you with the correct global permission:
