My company uses Jira OnDemand with GrassHopper integration.. question about API integration

We currently use Jira OnDemand for all our development tickets. We use GrassHopper integration.. I'm wondering if the Jira REST API would facilitate querying various elements of this integration. I want to create a small menubar widget that gives me a heads up on what everyone has "In Progress" on our GrassHopper board.

Or are there any Mac OSX native applications that support these features? I don't mind putting the work in.. just a little confused at the difference between OnDemand and Installed versions and how that affects API access.
