Hi,
I'm coming from a system (rally) in which you do not have to manually press a button to start and stop sprints, but I'm being told you must do so in Jira. I find this to be very tedious and mostly unnecessary. Why are the sprints not auto started based on the start date and completed based on the end date? Wouldn't that make more sense?
Is there a way to automate these perhaps based on the dates?
Hello @Chris Berry
Welcome to the Atlassian community.
There is not a native method to automatically start and end sprints based on their dates in Jira Cloud. There is not feature to enable for this, and there are no such actions available within Automation rules.
The Sprint API endpoints seem to indicate that the sprint State could be changed, but I have not explored it enough to see how one would specify what to do with incomplete work at the completion of.a sprint.

An app vendor published an article about having that capability in their app. I have not used the app nor do I know if there are other apps that also provide this capability.
I can't speak to why Atlassian made this design decision.
I think the idea of sprints is to review completed work after every sprint and plan what should be done/postpone for the next time interval. isn't it? :D
