More of a UI/UX Issue

I’m not sure if this is the right place to report this, as it’s not really a question but more of a UI/UX issue.

When clicking “Log Work”, the Time Tracking dialog opens, but the input focus isn’t automatically placed on the first field (Time Spent).

As a result, if you start typing immediately after opening the dialog, nothing happens. The user has to manually click into the Time Spent field before they can enter a value.

Would it be possible to have the Time Spent field receive focus automatically when the dialog opens? This would make the interaction more intuitive and keyboard-friendly.

Hello @Uduak Essien

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

We are a user community so we cannot directly change the core functionality of the product.

You can escalate this issue to your Jira Administrators and they can open a support case with Atlassian to find out if this is a known bug or existing enhancement request. As a non-admin end user you would not be able to open a support case.

You can use the Feedback option within the Jira app under the Help menu (the Question Mark next to your avatar) to provide feedback directly to Atlassian about enhancement requests, but that does not specifically open a support case through which you can have a dialog with them.

Hi @Uduak Essien ,

Adding to Trudy's answer — in my experience, pressing Q on an issue opens the Log Work dialog with the Time Spent field already focused, worth trying that instead of the ⋯ menu click if you haven't.

Shortcut behavior has shifted across Jira versions over the years, so it may depend on your instance.

Also we recently shipped a Quick Log Time panel in TimeEase — one-click preset buttons right in the issue sidebar, no modal, no focus to worry about at all. It won't cover odd/exact durations (it's preset-based), but for common increments it's a single click.
