I am using a classic Jira software project. I have made sure that both myself and other users have the manage sprint permission. None of us can see a "start a sprint" button in the backlog. Is this something that has been moved to only next-gen projects? Is there a workaround for sprints in the classic project for this case? Am I just missing something?
I have seen a few other people ask similar questions in threads, but they have not been answered.
Are you sure you're on a Scrum board? You may be on a Kanban board, ant that would explain why you don't see any sprint button as it is specific to Scrum boards.
Do you see an "Active sprints" menu in the left sidebar? If so, and if you do have the Manage sprints permission, you should see the Create sprint button on the right-hand side:
If you do see an "Active sprints" menu, could you please share your board filter query?
Hope this helps,
- Manon
Thank you for getting back to me @Manon Soubies-Camy
My bad though I should have clarified more. It is a Kanban board. Are sprints limited to just Scrum boards?

Yes, sprints are limited to Scrum boards - this is because a Kanban board is a continuous flow of work. You can't change a board from Kanban to Scrum, but you can create a new Scrum board using the same filter as your Kanban one.

Hello,
You need to have the manage sprints permission for all projects, from which your board selects issues.
