Migration jira from one server to another server

prashant_hiremath August 6, 2020

We want to migrate Jira from one server to another server through the XML import method, The version of Jira in the source is 8.5.0 and the target environment Jira version is 8.5.4, Is there any issues will arise after importing to the different version of Jira.

Hello @prashant_hiremath

Thank you for reaching out.

Both Server versions (8.5.0 and 8.5.4) are very close and do not have any major changes between them so it might not have any relevant impact during the migration of your server to another, however, there is no way to be absolutely certain it'll not have any impact but to test the migration.

That being said, we suggest choosing one of the ways below:

  1. Upgrade your current instance to 8.5.4 before importing, as recommended in the official documentation. This will ensure no impact is caused to the import
  2. Test the  import without upgrading the application source, manually checking and debugging if any  unexpected behaviors are impacting your site
P.S: Independent of the option selected, extract a backup from both instances to ensure no data will be lost in the process

Additionally, follow the steps of the documentation below to fulfill all the requirements for the migration and ensure it runs smoothly:

@prashant_hiremath You can migrate JIRA data from source JIRA Server v8.5.0 to a higher target JIRA Server v8.5.4 using XML backup and restore. There is not much difference in the versions since this is only a difference in bug fix or minor version. Please note that:

1. All existing JIRA data in the target JIRA application will be overwritten.

2. You will have to backup and restore attachments separately at filesystem level from the source host server to the target host server, either before or after import of XML data. I would suggest to do it before XML data import.

Hope that helps!
