Migrate projects between two Jira instances using Project Configurator for Jira

Bouabana February 17, 2023

Hello !

I am planning to move two projects from a Jira instance that is hosted by an external provider (Jira data center) to another jira instance that is hosted by my company. Both instances have different versions of Jira

I know that Atlassian has a plugin called "Project Configurator for JIRA" that facilitate the migration. My question is : Do i have to install the app on both instances or just on the source instance (that is hosted externally) ?

My strategy is to install "Project Configurator for JIRA" on the source instance to export the projects + their configurations (attachments, history and comments), then i will move this backup to the target instance of Jira (hosted locally) by doing a simple "import" that is a functionality of Jira. So my question is : will this work ?

If the answer is no, could you point me to a way to do this mirgation using the import/export functionality with a .csv file without losing the attachments, history and comments of the source projects ?

Thank you !

Hello @Bouabana

Welcome to the Atlassian community!

Per the documentation for the Project Configurator app (which is provided by AppFire, not Atlassian), if you plan to use Project Configurator to both export and import the data then:

Prerequisites

  • <snip>

  • The same version of Project Configurator is installed on both instances. If not, then the version on your target instance should be more recent than your source. You must have a licensed version to complete an import on a production instance.

I have no experience with using the Project Configurator to export a project and then trying to use another process to import that data into a Jira instance.

On a side note, exporting/importing via CSV file does not support moving issue history information. It also does not directly support moving attachments. To import attachments via a CSV import refer to the Importing Attachments section of this document:

Hi,

welcome to the community

you will need the addon on the both instance to make the export in the source then import it in the target instance.

if you can't do it you can follow the step describe here
