Migrate from JIRA Server to JIRA Cloud - License Transfer

Adam MacDonald August 29, 2018

We have the following segmented on-premise configuration:

  • JIRA Core with Service Desk (10 agents, 25 users)
  • JIRA Core with JIRA Software (100 users, 25 users)
  • JIRA Core with JIRA Software (250 users, 250 users)
  • Confluence (250 users)

Each of these solutions have their licenses expiring at different times  (along with the plugins).  We want to move to a single integrated cloud solution of:

JIRA Core, Software, Service Desk, Confluence

Are any of these on-premise licenses transferrable to cloud?  We read that the plugin licenses are transferable.  We read that the cloud to server licenses are not transferable.   We are hoping that the server to cloud is transferable :/, but from reading other similar threads, it is not looking like that.

@Adam MacDonald, Cloud is a different beast and you need to simply create a new Cloud instance and migrate the project data. You don't need to transfer licenses. If you are asking about some sort of financial concessions I would reach out to Atlassian Support. I have no idea if that is possible.

Thank you @Jack Brickey .  I was hoping we could begin decommissioning our 100/25 on prem install, then sign up for the cloud version using the same server license so that I could start our migration to cloud.  We just renewed most of our licenses recently - just before the company made the decision to move to the cloud.  I have read cloud is a different beast ... to be honest, kind-of looking forward to it especially when reading docs only to find out later, it is a cloud only feature :)

I am assuming the license transfer is a no no - but was hoping someone would say "look here, you can do it!!"

I would definitely reach out to Atlassian and see if they could help w/ the financial side of things somehow. Worth a shot.
