Make Fix Versions field accept arbitrary values?

Is there any way to configure the Fix Version field to accept an arbitrary string, rather than only accepting predefined values? Our build process makes it virtually impossible to keep adding fix versions to the list.

No, it needs to be a "pre-defined" option.  I use quotes because the "pre-definition" can be very close to usage - someone with project admin rights can create new options by entering new data.  Also, if you're using build tools like Bamboo or Jenkins, there are configuration and add-on options that allow them to create versions automatically for use by your users later.

Do those add-ons work with the Atlassian-hosted JIRA? That's what we use (and pay for), and our build process means we're cranking out version numbers multiple times per day (sometimes). We need to be able to add those painlessly to the list of Fix Versions.

We're not using Bamboo or Jenkins in these cases. They're manually-initiated builds and we want to keep doing it that way. But your mention of them suggests there should be a way to programmatically add version numbers to the list; we could build a script to do that as part of our manual build process.

IMO, it's a really stupid restriction.
