Is it possible to link a story from one project to another, and if so, will all the subtasks associated with that story being linked be in the link too? Also is there any kind of negative 'ripple affect' with linking stories and tasks into another project. Just trying to get the fastest way of getting visibility of all subtasks associated with stories, rather than linking to lots of individual subtasks. Thanks for any help.
Hello @Mark Hanley
Welcome to the community.
Are you using Jira Cloud or Jira Server/Data Center?
There is a limitation in Jira Cloud with linking issues across projects if you are using Team Managed projects. If you are using Jira Server/Data Center or are using Company Managed projects in Jira Cloud then it is possible to link issues across projects.
Jira provides a generic issue linking feature. This is separate from the making a an issue a "child" of an Epic, or making a Sub-tasks which is a special type of child issue. With the generic issue linking function you can create links between issues in different projects. Jira does not do anything based on those generic links - it doesn't update any of the issues automatically, though it is possible to add customizations that would automatically linked issues. If you link a story that has sub-tasks to another story, no link is created for the sub-tasks. The link is only between the two stories.
I think we need more information about your use case and what you hope to have happen with your linked issues. What problem are you trying to solve? What are you trying to achieve? When we understand that we can provide better advice.
Hi Trudy, thanks for the info. In essence I'm looking to pull info from a couple of different areas that are all working on different aspects of the project. The streams are from a few different departments. I have created my own Epic and stories, this is comprised of the other departments tasks as well my own. So rather than recreate the sub tasks individually I was hoping I could just pull them all across in one hit but effectively going up a level and by linking by stories. Seems like I'll have to continue to link to the subtasks individually, which is still better that having to recreate the info all over again from scratch.
Thanks Mark.

Is there a reason you are creating separate stories and creating links between those and the issues in the other departments?
You might want to investigate if you can create a Filter that will select all the issues you want to display from the multiple boards. If you can, then you can create a board based on that filter. You won't have to create links between issues.

Hi Trudy,
yes the filter suggestion sounds Ideal, I want to avoid duplication if possible.
I guess that I need to check that out.
Thanks again for the help
Mark
