Keeping Custom Field Values in Sync Between Parent and Child Issues Using Automation for Jira

Josef Sigl November 18, 2024

Hi all, i want to compare values of a custom field in parent and child issue.

With this Instructions it works nearly perfect =>

https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/keeping-custom-field-values-in-sync-between-parent-and-child-issues-using-automation-for-jira-1318881724.html

But if i change 2 or more values in this field, the values of the child-Issue will be erased.

The Change works only with 1 value

regards

Josef

Hi @Josef Sigl

Please share the details on your created rule, with step details and also with the audit log failure details.

What type of custom fields are you using, share details.

There is no error log, because it work perfectly if change only one value.

It don't work if change more than 1 value. Then the Automation rule clear all values of the CHILD issues.

Josef

Hi @Josef Sigl

Do change the values on the Epic or on the Child?

I think my example is simpler, if you make the changes on the Epic side:

Hi Marc, thanks a lot! It works!!
Now I fill the values at "Issue create" and "Parent Issue edit" and ut works perfektly.

The last thing that i've to do now is, filling the field in Child, if the field in child is empty, but the value in field of parent Issue is not EMPTY.

Can you help me again there?

Thank

Hi @Josef Sigl

What actions do you want to take;

  1. have the parent still overwrite the child?
  2. add the child option to the parent?
  3. add the child option to the parent and the parent options to the child?

Hi Marc,

I only need one way. From Parent to child.

I need to transfer these values once from the parent issue to the child issue.
currently there are many child Issues wich the field value is currently empty and i have to fill this.

Hi @Josef Sigl

Copy the Rule I provided and change the trigger, Use a manual trigger.

Then you are able to run that rule on every issue, via the action button, the action it will do is copy the current options from Epic to the children.

Or create a rule as follows, runs this one and then remove it. This rule will find all Epic based on a JQL in the scheduled trigger and then for each found Epic action on the child issues.
