Jira task overdue flag still visible after transition to Done or Not Required status

Md Mostofa Maruf

Hi,

In our Jira project, we have issues with overdue flag. When an issue’s due date passes, it is marked/flagged as overdue as expected.

However, we are observing that when those issues are later transitioned after the due date to Done or Not Required columns(which are mapped to the Done status catagory in the workflow), they still flagged as overdue. Is this expected Jira behaviour?

If so, is there any workaround to remove the overdue flag while keeping the due date? We don't want the overdue flag for any task that has been completed.

Thank you in advance for your advise and support.

Hi @Md Mostofa Maruf

Do you mean by overdue flag the due date is being marked red, for example in the Kanban board, like this (image below)?

In my case, when I transitioned the issue to a status in the done category, the due date became a normal due date without the red color and the warning sign.

Maybe you can share some more information or screenshots?

Hi Sandro,

Yes, that's correct. when a due date is before todays date it marked as red as showen below even if the issue is moved to done status.

Could you show a screenshot of your workflow?

Ok, so I can see different things here. What I would try is the following:

Instead of having the DONE column an "In Progress"-column, create new one called DONE, but as a "Done"-column:

In the workflow, make sure you have enabled that the transition sets a resolution when you move an issue to done (Perform actions > Update a work item field > Set resolution to Done):

Hi Sandro,

Thank you, the solution worked well. I appreciate your assistance.

For the existing issues, I set up a scheduled automation rule to update the resolution to “Done” or “Won’t Do”, as these tasks were created before the workflow actions nabled that the transition sets a resolution.

Please let me know if this correct approach

Thank you again.

Kind regards,
Maruf

Hi @Md Mostofa Maruf

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

The “overdue” indicator in Jira is based purely on the Due date vs current date, and it doesn’t automatically consider the issue status (Done or Not Required).

If you want to remove the overdue flag for completed issues while keeping the due date, a common workaround is to use Automation to adjust the due date when the issue transitions to a Done status, or rely on board filters/quick filters to exclude completed issues from views where the overdue flag matters.

Hi Gor,

Thank you for your response. We would like to keep the original due date as future reference., therefore an automation to adjust the due date might not be good idea, We would also like to view very task in the board regardless their status.

I was just wondering if there's any workaround in this scenerio, where we could view the original due date for completed tasks and only removing the 'overdue' indicator for the completed tasks.

Kind regards,

Hi @Md Mostofa Maruf ,

Question - when you transition those items to "Done" or "Not Required" columns/statuses, do you also set Resolution value?

Also, when it comes to flagging, are you using native flag functionality or are you just referring to the due date field and the native system visualization related to it?

Hi Tobi,

Thank you for your response.

RE: We don't have a resulation value.

RE: I am referring to the due date field and native system visualization as marked below.
