Hello. It's a pleasure to be part of the community. I've been using Jira since 2023.

Jira Story Points are gone

I created a new Jira site, and when I set up a Scrum board for a project, to my surprise, the Story Points field doesn't appear or is not editable.

I went to the Project Layout and added Story Points, but it didn't help.

I checked the board settings, and Story Points were already selected as the estimation method.

I also dragged the Story Points field into the layout below other fields, saved the changes, but nothing works.

I've read several articles, searched online and with AI tools, and still couldn't find a solution.

Very frustrating.

If anyone has had a similar problem and managed to solve it, I would really appreciate the help.

I'm using a company-managed project and the estimation method is set to Story Points.

Hi @Marcelo Maldonadowelcome to the community

Just to add to what @Mangali Chandrashekar  mentioned, one thing that trips a lot of people up is that Jira Cloud actually has two separate fields: Story Points (for company-managed spaces) and Story point estimate (for team-managed spaces). Since you're on a company-managed space, make sure you're editing the context of the right one

Head to Jira Settings > Issues > Custom Fields, find Story Points, and check that both your space and the relevant work types are included in the field context. That's usually the culprit when the field just won't show up despite everything else looking correct.

Hi @Marcelo Maldonado In company-managed projects, Jira uses field configurations and field contexts to decide whether a field shows up for a work type. Even if you add the field to the layout, if it’s not available for the specific issue type (e.g., Story), it won’t appear.

  1. Go to: Jira Settings → Issues → Custom Fields
  2. Find Story Points → click … → Contexts and default value
  3. Check the Field Context:
    • Project: Your project must be selected
    • Work Type: Story (or any type you want to estimate with points) must be selected

Hello @Marcelo Maldonado

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Adding to this, what is the Type of your project; Business or Software?

If you created a Business project then the Story Points field would not have been included in the project.

@Trudy Claspill

He mentioned about Scrum Board. Business Projects doesn't have Scrum Boards at All, Scrum Boards are part Jira Software Spaces.

@Arkadiusz Wroblewski

Yes, I am aware that Scrum Boards are not natively part of a Business project.

A Scrum board can be created separately from the project, after the project already exists.

During that process the user can select to create the board from any existing project, including Business projects

The details of how the board was created were not provided, but this is a possible scenario.

@Trudy Claspill

Basically you are right. As my old teacher told "Never exclude any scenario, everything is possible".

Well we provided couple things here, let's wait for more input and response 🖐️
