Jira Plans - How to color by work item type?

Hi Forum,

I'm looking for a way to color our Initiatives in Jira Plans so that each Initiative has a different color. Our current hierarchy is Initiatives > Epics > User Stories, but unfortunately, the current settings in Jira Plans only allow coloring by Epic.

The only workaround I've come up with is to color by Label and assign each Initiative a unique label, which I’d prefer to avoid.

Please share if you know of another way or have found a smarter workaround.

Best regards

Hi Simon,

If you're aiming to color Initiatives individually in Jira Plans, the correct way is to go to View settings → Color by → Issue Type, and then assign specific colors to the Initiative issue type.

This won't allow unique colors per individual Initiative, but it will ensure that all Initiatives share a distinct color, separate from Epics or Stories, which still helps visually differentiate them in the timeline.
