Jira Cloud: J and K Keyboard Shortcuts Reversed – How to Fix?

I'm using Jira Cloud and trying to navigate through issue lists using the keyboard shortcuts J and K, as described in the official documentation. According to the docs:

  • J should move to the next issue (down)
  • K should move to the previous issue (up)

However, in my case, the behavior is reversed: pressing J moves up, and K moves down. I'm not using any custom keyboard shortcut extensions (like Vimium), and this happens consistently across sessions.

Additionally, I have another question:
After performing a JQL search, is there a way to automatically focus on the issue list so I can immediately start navigating with J/K?
Currently, I always have to click into the result list with the mouse first. This often puts the focus into the editable field of the issue, and I have to press ESC to exit edit mode before I can use J/K navigation. It’s a bit cumbersome.

Question:
Has anyone experienced this issue before? Is there a way to reset or configure the keyboard shortcut behavior in Jira Cloud so that J and K work as documented?
Also, any tips on how to automatically focus the issue list after a JQL search to enable seamless keyboard navigation?

Hi @Heinz_ Erik _Extern

I never experienced this issue before. Like @Ollie Guan suggests try to rule out any browser plugins first.

About your other question:

After performing a JQL search, is there a way to automatically focus on the issue list so I can immediately start navigating with J/K?

Here is something I just tried:

  1. Type your JQL
  2. Hit <enter> to search
  3. Press <tab> to change focus of your cursor. It will go to the "expand editor" icon but this does not matter

  4. <j> and <k> should work now

Your cursors' focus does not have to be in the list. Clicking anywhere on the page should be fine.

Works nearly, I have to tab until I am on the table with the tickets. It's OK for now.

Can I ask on which screen you're doing this exactly? I was testing it from the global search screen.

Well you can not compare those anymore. The code base of on prem and cloud are different.

Hi @Heinz_ Erik _Extern ,

Have you tried other browsers, or even the privacy mode of your browser? In some special cases, browser plug-ins may affect some shortcuts and cause conflicts.

Tested in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. As well in Inkognito mode. Same behavior

  • J moves up
  • K moves down
