Jira Cloud Integration with Slack

Josh Barnes September 20, 2021

When my company was originally on our Server instance within Slack if we typed out an for example "Hey look at issue XXX-123" and Slack would post a link automatically after from the Jira bot.

I am trying to get this set up I have downloaded the Jira Cloud for Slack app but not sure where to go from there.

Hi @Josh Barnes ,

Coming from the Jira Server app to the Jira Cloud for Slack app, there are a couple differences to be aware of in terms of issue unfurls:

  1. Full issue URLs (e.g. https://yoursite.atlassian.net/browse/ISSUE-123) will always unfurl
  2. Issue keys (e.g. ISSUE-123) will only unfurl if that channel has a subscription, which can be checked with /jira manage in the channel:

That difference can be confusing sometimes. If you can remember that only the connected projects will unfurl for the issue key, that will go a long way to helping make the switch to Cloud go smoothly!

To get started with the Jira Cloud for Slack app, what you'll want to do is:

  1. Install the Jira Cloud app in your Slack workspace (sounds like you've already done this!)
  2. Use the /jira login command in Slack, or follow the prompts from the Jira app. This will link your Slack user to your Atlassian account.
  3. Use the /jira connect command in any channels you want to get notifications from, or allow issue-key unfurls from. While the projects need to be connected to the channel, you can mute any channel subscriptions in Jira if you don't wish the channel to receive notifications from events. In the screenshot above, you can see two subscriptions to the same Jira project, one of which has been muted.

Let me know if you have additional questions!
