Hi,
We have a project template that we use and share settings with each time we create a new Jira project for a client. However, every time we create a new project, we need to manually create a Kanban board within it.
Is there a way to automate the board creation step as part of the Jira project setup?
Hi @Youmna Alomari ,
Thanks for the great question.
As I did research, Jira can't auto-create a Kanban board when creating a new Jira project.
Boards are tied to filters, and those filters are typically specific to a project.

Hi Youmna,
Unfortunately, the board is not created when you create a project based on an existing project. However, you can copy the board used by the "Template" project and simply change out the filter used by the board. Yes, it's a few extra steps, but it should work for you.

Yes, that is what we are doing now. I thought there might be a way to automate this process when we create a new project based on the template we use.
Thanks for confirming.

Hey @Youmna Alomari ,
As far as I know, the only projects that come with a Kanban Board out of the box are the ones being created using the Kanban Template.
You should also be able to create boards via the API (see https://developer.atlassian.com/cloud/jira/software/rest/api-group-board/#api-rest-agile-1-0-board-post), but I'm not sure whether this really speeds up your problem.
Regards,
Thorsten

Hi @Youmna Alomari ☺️ If you're open to using a third-party app, I think templating.app could work very well for you.
Then, you can create a project and a board within the project in just a few clicks.
You can find us at the Atlassian Marketplace: ➡️ https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1224664?tab=overview&hosting=cloud
Here's how this could look:

Thank you. We are all set now, but I will keep you in mind for the future.

Hello @Youmna Alomari 👋
If you are willing to use a third party app, you can skip the manual step to create a Kanban board entirely by cloning your template project with the Project Clone feature in our Deep Clone for Jira app.
Open Apps > Deep Clone → choose Project Clone.
Select your template project as the Source project, enter the new project name/key.
Click Clone project. Deep Clone will create the new project, copy all shared-configuration objects and recreate the Kanban board in one go.
