Java VM memory statistics

Jira runs very slow when using the web portal.  Could it be caused form the current java Vm memory status currently set for Jira application memory?

If so, what do you recommend increasing it by?  Server is running Windows 2012 using 8gb of memory.

Hey Michael,

Welcome to the Community! I see you've got a couple other recent questions about RAM / hardware specs for Jira.

It's difficult to say outright that you should make any specific changes to speed up your Jira instance. There are a lot of factors that affect speed, and every server environment is different.

Some questions you'll want to answer before making any changes:

  1. What is Jira's current heap allocation? This article has more information about finding out Jira's current allocation and increasing it if necessary.
  2. Are there particular times when it is slow during the day, or is it "all the time"?
  3. Is your Windows 2012 server running inside a VM, and is that VM sharing resources with other servers on the VM hypervisor?
  4. Have you checked Jira's disk access speed?
  5. Have you checked Jira's database access speed?

In general, you'll want to understand more factors around Jira's operating environment before just throwing more RAM at it. It's possible that an increase in heap size could help your performance, but it's likely to hurt you in the long run if you're actually struggling with disk throughput speed. Once you've taken a look at the other variables, we can get a clearer picture of changes that might help your performance.

Cheers,
Daniel
