JQL to retrieve all issues for fixversions with a historical release date

How do I write JQL to locate issues associated with a fixversion that has a release date prior to today?

JQL Tricks Plugin (paid) has a versionsAfterDate function which you may find useful. It can take relative dates (even look at prior dates).
