JIRA Agile Question

Our team is new to JIRA. We are using it to do our AGILE sprints. Right now it appears we are able to start a new sprint before we close the previous one. Shouldn't JIRA at least give us some sort of flag letting us know we should close the previous sprint before starting a new one? Just wanted to see what the expected behavior for this is.

That's a feature of Jira Agile(it is not enabled by default). You can enable/disable it in the Add/ons administration tab, the setting is found in JIRA Agile Labs under the name Parallel Sprints.
