Issues with creating new Custom field

Mark Hayford March 1, 2022 edited

I created a new "custom field" using "Short Text(plain tex only)". Working fine, except for the fact that when running a JQL, I cannot do a query search using the "=" (not an available option) ... only the ~ sign is available and that is not pulling in my results ... Is that a limitation of setting up as Short text ? What can I do to edit the query capabilities?

OR ...

The only other option I saw in set-up that I might use was to set up custom field as "Label", but I wasn't sure if that would impact the use of the already existing "Label" field. I certainly DO NOT want to do that ... So would there be an impact to existing Label field ?

Thx, Mark

Hi @Mark Hayford and welcome to the community!

A text field indeed has it's own type of operator(s).

https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/search-syntax-for-text-fields/

A "=" operator (I  believe) can only be used with fields that have pre-fixed values (like select lists)

You do mention you get the wrong results when you query with ~ (matches), perhaps we can dive deeper in that?

hey Dirk, thx for the fast response!

With "~" I cannot retrieve two word inputs ..IE., A query such as Custom field ~ test, works OK, but a query such as Custom field ~ test results. does not work ..Assume that is probably as designed?

Custom field ~ test results

will indeed not work but if you add quotation marks that should return results atleast.

Custom field ~ "test results"

You can work with "required" operators or combine logic gates but if the problem was that the query failed you should already be fine with quotations.

yep, great, both those answers work..thx!
