Issues upgrading to a supported PostgreSQL on Jira server

We have an issue where we are on a unsupported version of PostgreSQL and wanted to upgrade to a supported version.  We were attempting to use the pg_upgrade method to update to PostgreSQL 12.9.1 from PostgreSQL 9.6 and managed to generate a collection of error messages not to mention getting very familiar with creating and reverting to snapshots.

Has anyone had success with that upgrade method and do you have any suggestions about a successful upgrade?

Just a suggestion, you may want to go through intermediate steps. One major version at a time. 9 to 10, 10 to 11, 11 to 12.
