After an "update" by our IT group on Friday, I have issues in the backlog that show one status on the card (I added Status to the card layout for the backlog on my board), but when you click the ticket # and look at the Issue Detail view, or actually load the ticket itself, the issue is marked as DONE.
Issues that are Done shouldn't show up in the backlog, correct?
As a follow up to this, it really sounds like something is corrupting the index. It is likely that this is going to continue to damage the index, leading to more and more need to re-index the project and destroy your people's faith in the system and hence usage.
You should identify what is doing this damage and fix it as a matter of urgency (one valid thing is a "one off disk corruption", but you need to know that before you can choose to do nothing further)
@David Engler you can reindex a single project from the project's admin section.
Also "Integrity checker" might be a good thing to run.

The IT team did a re-index on the project in question (which affects dozens of people, the reason we're not allowed to do it individually), and it seems to have worked.

Do you know what they did? Hopefully the did a JIRA backup beforehand, just in case. Sometimes issues like this can be corrected by re-indexing JIRA. I would start there.

We're not allowed to re-index, though I fear you're right. Of course, with an org our size, that will take hours and hours to do.
Don't know what they did exactly, but the results so far are not good. Our Jira instance has been exceptionally unstable, slow, prone to time-outs on every screen change, etc. over the last several weeks.
