Issues Board - Want To Be Able to Add Columns

I am used to using Jira in enterprise environments where you can modify the view of the Issues screen.   Now I've set up a free instance for personal use.  Is this not being able to add columns to the screen a restriction of hosted Jira?  Is this a restriction of the free version?  I have no problem purchasing a hosted product if that will provide the capability.

In a nutshell, depending on the template used to create a project you may end up with a default board that is not configurable. But for the most part you can absolutely add columns, this is particularly true for any software project.
