Issue with Excel add-in - generates in chunks

Hello Team,

I have been using the JIRA Excel add-in to extract data, and it was working as expected earlier. However, over the past few days/weeks, I’ve noticed inconsistent behavior during data retrieval. My observation is it happens when the data volume is high. I have 2 other files which have about 500 and 3000 records respectively and they work fine.

Issue observed:

  • When a JQL query or filter returns ~17,849 records, the add-in:
    • Starts data retrieval,
    • Leaves an equivalent number of blank rows,
    • Then begins generating the data again.
    • Once it generates 17,849 records in the first instance, it steps
  • This pattern repeats multiple times (approximately 15–18 instances).
  • I initially used a saved filter and later tried a direct JQL query, but the behavior remains unchanged.

I wanted to check if this is a known issue, a configuration limitation, or if there are any recommended workarounds.

Any pointers or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Hey @Phani Kumar Sivapuram_PHS01 ,

I'd say that, generally, this integration will behave inconsistently whenever you try to fetch large volumes of data. I mean, it's not that it will fail every time, but it's more likely to do so than to return what you'd expect. 🫤

Now, you could check the following bugs:

There are more, but nothing that describes your exact experience.

If you're using any calculations within Excel, try to 'pause' them while you do the data import, as it could also affect the whole experience.

Also, this was announced a couple of days ago Deprecation of legacy workaround to export >10,000 work items, but I'm not sure if it would affect Excel integration in any way.

You could reach out to Atlassian Support if you are on a paid plan and see what they will recommend 👀

Cheers,
Tobi

Hello @Tomislav Tobijas  - Thanks a lot for your response. I'll look through the bugs you provided and would reach out to Atlassian further as needed.

Thanks again.

Phani
